Free Throw, A Journey by Shawn Doughty

How to make a free throw
I lift my sweaty body off the dusty gym floor
I walk behind the black line, but it's not just a black line
It's free points, no one to block or steal the ball from you
There shouldn't be any pressure, but it's all pressure
As I stand there awaiting the ball my palms are sweating
I look at the official and nod, he bounces the leather sphere to me
I becopme nervous, What if I miss? I can't miss
With a deep breathe I clear my head of all thoughts
The gym goes quiet, time slows down, everyone looking at me
I catch the ball, spin it in my hand trying not to drop it
Boom, one bounce and im ready
Square, Arch, Follow Through
Line up my body, line up my arm, ball of my palm
Shooting a free throw is like being front and center stage
Everyone in the starring, half wanting you to miss, the other to make
Bend my knees, straighten my knees, release, follow through
Watch the backspin of the basketball, watch the ball in slow motion
But before you know it, swish, and the crowd yells and claps
A free throw is more than a free shot
